Moje skutecne Ja / True essence of Myself

29. dubna 2011 v 4:06 | Veronika Pitrova |  No worries in Australia!
Lynn to vystihla jako uz dlouho nikdo...a to spolu bydlime teprve par tydnu. Kdyz jsme pred par dny chystaly veceri, zeptala se me jestli ma prinest to vino, ktere jsme koupily. Slova byla zbytecna, jediny muj pohled stacil a Lynn :
"Odmitnes ty nekdy dezert nebo bile vino?!"

Few days ago Lynn had captured the true essence of myself...and we have been living together for only couple of weeks. During the preparations for our dinner Lynn had asked if I also wanted the wine we bought together. No words were needed, one regard was enough and Lynn just said:
"Will you ever say no to dessert or white wine?!"

Behani podel pristavu / Jogging along the harbour

28. dubna 2011 v 4:12 | Veronika Pitrova |  No worries in Australia!
O to vic si pak uzivam ta vzacna odpoledne, kdy je venku svetlo, slunicko a ja mam volno a muzu vybehnout.

Not that I would have plenty time for jogging here, however sometimes I manage to find spare time...mostly during the weekends because usually it gets dark already at six which makes it difficult to go jogging outisde. I so hate jogging in the dark, that's why I mostly end up on treadmill in a gym. Like this I can appreciate the moments of my free time, sunshine and daylight even more! This is probably my most favourite track - along the Blackwattle and Rozelle Bay with Anzac bridge view. I admit that it is a bit too much of concrete and not really nature, but still I find it beautiful environment for jogging.

Aboriginská otázka aneb kdo má pravdu? / Aboriginal issues or who is eventually right?

16. dubna 2011 v 16:24 | Veronika Pitrová |  No worries in Australia!

Since I have come here I feel really attracted by the issue of Aboriginal Australians. To be honest, I didn't know how big and serious the problem still is. Within the society and also within the political layers. One of the guests on last Q&A session where I was participating in the audience was Bess Price, the Aboriginal leader from Central Australia. After the session I had a chance to ask her about several issues she mentioned during the talkshow and it turned out to be very interesting. Our conversation ended by an invitation for me to come to Alice Springs to see the aboriginal education, community and customs through my own eyes and experience different things than tourists taken by bus tours. So, I feel really attracted...and I started planning the trip...

But this is not the end! Bess' appearance at the Q&A evoked a reaction from Larissa Behrendt, law professor at UTS Sydney, helself of an aboriginal descent and even with Czech links - her step mother and step sister are Czech!!! She comented on her Twitter about Bess opinions presented in Q&A saying ""I watched a show where a guy had sex with a horse and I'm sure it was less offensive than Bess Price." Moreover it was at the same day when Larissa was appointed by Gillard's government to do a review of Aboriginal higher education.

So as you can see, it has been really heated discussion, unfortunatelly. Larissa is blamed for not being enough "aboriginal", too much "international" and far away to know what "real" Aboriginal people really want and need. And I have now a moral dilemma to find out whose part shall I take. Bess was really interesting to talk to, on the other hand Larissa's books are so catchy and I can't stop reading. I had a chance to talk to Bess face to face and I can contact her in the future. As for Larissa, I am planning to meet her at some point next week for an interview. Once I have more information, I might have my own opinion on this issue. Anyway, it is incredible feeling to be right in the middle of two completely opposite views!

V australske televizi / ABC experience

16. dubna 2011 v 15:01 | Veronika Pitrova |  No worries in Australia!

I am really a hunter of the experiences! Maybe it is because I am here only for short period of time and that is why I want to make the most of my stay here. I want to experience as much as I can and if possible enjoy the less touristy things possible. Few weeks ago I found out about a programme on ABC called Q&A where an anchor invites 4 to 5 guests to which public in the studio can ask any question in the live streaming. First session I saw was the one with Julia Gillard and it was a really big thing because ABC used a video question from Julian Assange who addressed the Prime Minister. All the week which followed this Monday was full of quotes from ABC's Q&A and whether or not it was appropriate from a public broadcaster to confront Prime Minister with Wikileak's founder. Similarly last week, when former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, current Minister of Foreign Affairs, was a guest in Q&A and in live session he admitted that he did mistakes while in Prime Minister's office. That's why I got the idea that it would be interesting to see how does the Q&A set the agenda for other media for that particular week.
Lynn jako moderátorka / Lynn as an anchorwoman

And because it is always better to have the information from the primary source, we asked our professor at UTS who used to work for ABC if he couldn't manage to get us a permission for the Monday's live session. Eventually, we got more that we have actually asked for! After the live session one of the procuders took us to the backstage where all the guests and producers gather after every session for a small "party". We were presented to almost entire production team of the Q&A and also to some guests. One of them was for example Finance Minister Penny Wong. So not only am I working for the NSW Department of Health, I am also shaking hands with the federal ministers.:-)
Studio ABC NEWS 24 ma sklenenou stenu do vstupni haly cele budovy. Tomu rikam transparentnost.

Studio of ABC NEWS 24 is easily accesible through the main hall next to the reception. Whoever comes to the building of the public broadcaster can see throught the glass wall directly into the studio where the news are presented from. Transparency, right?

Pulmaraton za dvermi / Half marathon is approaching

16. dubna 2011 v 11:31 | Veronika Pitrova |  No worries in Australia!
"Vzdy o krok dal!" rikali jsme casto v Dansku. A muj cil? V prvni rade dobehnout, v druhe rade bych se rada umistila v prvni polovine zavodniku. Tak uvidime....!

"Always one step further!" was the quote we used a lot in Aarhus. Here in Sydney I stick to what I have learnt in Denmark and I'm continuing to keep this quote in mind...that is probably why I decided to sign in for the Sydney half marathon. On 15th May I will be on start with 11 935 on my chest, ready to beat the 21km track in the cetre of Sydney. I was little bit hesitating because my knee is sometime funny and decides to ache, but I am in the process of training so hopefully I should be fine. And my aim? Primary to finish the track, secondly to place myself with the first half of runners.;-) So, lets see!

Prochazka kolem pobrezi / Coastal walk Bondi to Bronte

16. dubna 2011 v 2:50 | Veronika Pitrova |  No worries in Australia!

As the temperature is dropping down every day and the amount of sunshine has declined significantly since I am here, every sunny day becomes very precious. Therefore I had one safed trip for "when the weather is nice" to the eastern coast of Sydney. So I took my book, hop on the bus and off I went. The coastal walk stretches for up to 14 km and it goes via several beaches. I didn't walk much as I prefered to enjoy the sun, view and my book. Wonderful Satuday!

Narozeniny plne prekvapeni / Birthday full of surprises

15. dubna 2011 v 15:17 | Veronika Pitrova |  No worries in Australia!
Nepamatuju si narozeniny, ktere by byly plne tolika naprosto necekanych prekvapeni! Jedno priletelo pres hory, more a oceany po internetu...druhe me cekalo na navsteve u spoluzacek, ktere mi vlastnorucne vyrobily dort i narozeninovou cepici.

I can't remember any birthday which would be so full of surprises as my birthday here in Sydney last weekend. In the meantime I would like to thank to everybody who send me the birthday wishes, let it be on Facebook or skype, via email or sms. Many many thanks! I really appreciate that you think about me although I am so far far away. So thank you very much. It was a very special birthday - lonely in one aspect - without the family and closest friends (who are all around the world anyway, but the majority is based in Prague), on the other hand I got a great compensation for my loneliness through really unexpected surprises. One came over the mountains and oceans from Czech through the internet and the other one was a handmade cake from two of my classmates!

It was also sport/cultural birthday as I started that day by a jogging along the harbour and I ended it at the concert of Mozart's Requiem in a church. I know that Requiem is not really joyfull piece nevertheless it is one of my favourites also because I used to sing it myslef.

So, thanks again for all the wishes, the next ones will be "orange" and Amsterdam is much closer to Czech then Sydney.

Tak trochu jiná zoo / Slightly different zoo

3. dubna 2011 v 12:41 | Veronika Pitrová |  No worries in Australia!

This Sunday was planned for a trip to the australian animal park. Featherdale wildlife park is situated appx one hour away from Sydney, so we got some fruits and the market and went on the trip to meet the koalas, kangaroos and other australian animals. I had a feeling like beeing on a schooltrip in a zoo. It was soooo much fun! I really enjoyed it! And I definitely fell in love with koalas! They are just soooooooooooooooo cute! And the best thing was that you could touch not only koalas but also emus and kangaroos. So much fun! Great experience!

Nemohla jsem z nich spustit oči. / I couldn't stop taking pictures.
Stále nechápu, jaktože nespadnou.
I still don't understand how do the manage not to fall.
Klokani byli taky úžasní a nechali se i pohladit.
Kangaroos were also cute and so kind, you could even touch them.

To teda živý krokodýl není.

(At the crocodile area of Featherdale Wildlife Park, Sydney. People are staring at a croc statue.)
Veronika: I'm so disappointed that they don't have a real crocodile here...
Boy: It is real!
Veronika: No. It is not!
Boy: It is!
Veronika: No. It's not! It's not moving.
(A zookeeper comes to feed the birds around us.)
Lynn: Hi, I'm wondering if there's a real crocodile here?
Zookeeper: It's there! It is REAL!

Zázraky se dějí / Miracles happen

1. dubna 2011 v 15:11 | Veronika Pitrová |  No worries in Australia!

It is exactly at the time when you don't know where to go and you are almost about to give it up. But once you stop pushing things too hard it finally happens. After five weeks of really intensive job hunting (receptionist, cleaning, bars, sandwich bars etc) I got a temp placement at the reception of the headquarter of the New South Wales Ambulance Service. I think that during that day I answered about 500 calls and I am really not exagerating. First hours were especially tough because sometimes people call from really different parts of the country, even from Queensland and the accent was sometimes so hard that I had really hard times to understand. But I did my best. Nevertheless, few people said they will make a complain about me. Well, it was exactly the opposite. And instead of criticism I received the recognition and was offered job for the next 8 to 10 weeks, my exact time remaining in Sydney. I still can't believe that this is happening. It is such a relief. Such a joy that I achieved it all by myself because of my skills. If somebody had told me a year ago I would be working for the Department of Health in Australia I would have thought he was crazy. But I have excatly what I wanted - part time receptionist for the time I wanted and on top of that Im working with the paramedics. I am so pleased to have the chance of being part of that team! Thanks my guardian angel! And thanks Julia Ross.
